mdlbear: the positively imaginary half of a cubic mandelbrot set (Default)
[personal profile] mdlbear

Rough week. There are going to be a lot more of them.

Almost all of the books we're keeping have been moved out to the pod, and most of the other Great Room stuff as well. So have our CDs and DVDs. The breakfront and buffet have been cleared and sorted; they'll go soon. Half of our booze is gone, as are the 12-string and the M-Audio Quattro and preamp. Our housekeeper, G', has taken the hot tub and has claimed the piano. My brother wants the musk ox (a marvelous sculpture entitled "Here I Stand") and the bound volumes of Analytical Chemistry that have Dad's articles in them.

Haven't started on the garage yet. Need to get the tools sorted and listed. Ugh. Pictures first full week in March -- that'll be tight. We basically have only 19 days left, because the final weekend will be taken up by g's Bat Mitzva.

Things are increasingly surreal. I alternate between nostalgia, regret, depression, and terror, with random, inexplicable stretches of calm and occasionally even optimism. I guess adventures are like that. Nasty, uncomfortable things.

  * up 6:04; W=205; laundry, dishes
  * 12:43 Colleen up and fed. Me too; bacon and a toasted English muffin. I don't
    remember having had breakfast.
  * The last box cleared out. Saying goodbye to the Edo pads and eWriters. May keep one
    of each for memories. Getting rid of the Slug and ShivaPlug. Shelves cleared except
    for cups and stuff that's staying for the moment. Still have the paper to go. The
    Filk one had my copy of "Life Cycle of the Flowers"! May have "Staying Home Alone" as
    well. There are still bins on the hearth, but they're mostly ready to go. Decided to
    get rid of the Dell monitor. It's wonderful, but it's also not only bulky but too
    heavy for me to lift safely. :(
  * I now have an empty moving box, as well as several empty bins.
  * gone through the files almost completely, using the rolling file as staging. Found
    Dad's PhD thesis.
  * 3-ish pot stickers for "lunch"
  * Took the Dell monitor off the desk, replaced it with the 4x3 Samsung.
  * Unscrewed the desk. The file cabinet is empty.
  : looks like 4-6" snow tomorrow. And I'm on call, at least until I can find a sub.
  % 9:40 wiped out. level 5 or so back pain. But I've re-made the bed, emptied C's bag,
    and relined the Great Room catbox. So...
  % 10ish drifty

0206Mo
  * up 5:05; W=202; dishes
  : There is, in fact, snow. Looks like ~2-3" Luckily, we still have power.
  % Getting to work was challenging. The sidewalks were slippery in many places,
    including on the hill going down to the bus stop.
  * Brief oncall, while a swap was arranged. Mohan came to the rescue; I'll be on call
    starting on my birthday. I'll order a shuttle for Mom on the following Tuesday.
    Work on $PROJECT is mixed -- my file is getting sent; the one going the other way is
    still failing.
  % Coming home was even more challenging: there is slush on the sidewalks in West
    Seattle; if it gets below freezing tonight I'm working from home tomorrow.
  % Right QL hurting all day. Since yesterday, actually.
  * fired up the EeePC and deleted Colleen's account. It's hopelessly out of date, and
    really needs a fresh install. I don't see any point in keeping it. The power
    connector seems flaky too.
  * Fired up Barnard and did an update. That and Purple are worth keeping. Need a Honu
    install.

  & Will work from home. Sidewalks look dangerous.
  * Pretty full day; files exchanged in both directions. Fixes in for outgoing job.
  & mixed work with a little house-packing. Colleen and G' have been busy as well. CDs
    boxed (by C, g, j yesterday; reboxed from 3 ft^3 to bankers boxes today by C & G')
  : We have a new organizer. Old one didn't mesh with N's work style.
  * Packed the china cabinet with C and j. Did the sculpture by myself, using a 3 ft^3
    box and shredder chad. Small stuff in a separate box; that was a mistake, but I
    didn't realize until too late.
  * Emptied out booze from both cabinets. Tired bear. Only the candles are left, and the
    stuff on top. May leave all that for others.

0208We
  * up 6:45; W=202; laundry, packing
  * Pay: Wells, Amex, Sound
  * Reasonably productive at work, but I'm behind and I have to do annual reviews, too.
  * reset old phones and tablets; scrubbed 3 IDE disks. (Still have the 500 to do)
    consolidated many of the smaller bins into a 3ft^3 box
  * humira

0209Th
  * up 6:20; W=202.4; laundry, dishes, packing
  : 6:45p Scrubbing a 500GB drive takes forever; about half done after having been started
    this morning.
  * Annual all-hands meeting. All afternoon.
  : Huge progress has been made in the Great Room in my absence. The entire pod-bound
    pile in front of my desk has gone to the pod. There are many (used) book boxes on the
    porch; they will have to be moved inside tonight.
    ... batch 1 of boxes taken in. Colleen and G miscommunicatated about which of them
    was getting pizza. C has ordered.
    ... took down the wire shelves from my desk corner, + the top wooden shelf.
    ... Started going through my box of buttons and badges. Keeping only ones where I was
    a guest, pretty much.
    ... 10:50 took down desk.

0210Fr
  * up 6:30; W=205; laundry, sorting,
  : The hot tub is gone (to G'); it looks like the piano and maybe the breakfront and
    buffet have takers; a lot of stuff has been podded; we have book boxes.
    -> G' has claimed the piano as well.
  : Either LJ has been down most of today, or everybody I know has moved to DW and stopped
    crossposting. -> or it's simply very confused about ordering. It does not appear to
    be showing posts in reverse chronological order; it may be based on time of most
    recent comment or some such nonsense. -> no, because the top entry has none. Looks
    like they've gone all facebook on us.

0211Sa
  * Up 6am; W=205; laundry, sorting
  * Long wikipedia dive starting with bosons vs. fermions in Irregular Webcomic,
    and ending as they often do in category theory and commutative diagrams after passing
    through cellular automata, quantum mechanics, and vector calculus. What tied it
    together was commutation.
  * Long day. (moving guy) Derek boxed up the books and Goodwill stuff. Only the Rainbow
    Room books are left.
  * L and A came and took about half of our booze. L. bought the 12-string and
    the M-Audio recording rig -- he intends to podcast with that.
  * Now down to two shelves in the desk area. Laptops boxed except for Starshine.
  : Main thing now in the Great Room is the papers. There are quite a few empty bins,
    and a few things left to box. Well, quite a few, including the remaining booze.
  & folding up the music bookshelves, they fell over and landed on Ticia. She is now
    hiding behind the blue sectional. Seems basically unhurt, but badly frightened. I
    -am an idiot- _was incredibly careless_ *came frighteningly close to hurting my cat*
    -> ok, she went upstairs. But she's still afraid of me.
    -> hid under the bed for a while, then came out and seemed none the worse for wear.
