Shortly after midnight I got the PSTN (that's Public Switched Telephone Network, for those not familiar with telco-speak) line working from Asterisk. It's still not exactly the way I want it, but at least it will make and answer calls. Next step is getting it to talk to a VoIP provider.

Unfortunately, having been designed as a smart, basically stand-alone device, it's pretty different from the stuff that * usually works with. And of course it needs its own web-based configuration, so there are lots of free variables to tweak. There's enough information, but just barely, on the various wiki and forum sites.
