Muckin' the Byres

It just occurred to me that I can overlap three rather disagreeable major projects this weekend: moving thestarport.org's DNS and email, upgrading the fileserver, and cleaning the office.

I just realized that I have to do the first two in that order, or a lot of email will end up dropped on the floor. Most of that will be spam, of course, but the sheer volume of it means that if I don't move it, the tiny mailbox at my ISP will fill up and things will start bouncing.

But I also realized that having my fileserver out of service for a while will remove a major distraction that would normally keep me from cleaning out the office. Which direly needs it. Because I have to do a lot of that before I have the space to do the taxes. AAARGH!

I don't think I need help with this, just some good excuses to stop making excuses, if that makes any kind of sense. This post is a step in that direction.

Ooh, you have a plan! Would it help or distract if Colleen became your cheering section for the cleaning?

Or would it help more if you agreed on a special meal, something she makes that you particularly like, and you helped her assemble the ingredients and then you clean while she cooks--both productive, no distractions for the bear, and a reward at the end of your efforts?

Would someone being all Dommely help? WEG...It's that, or my imitation of a cheerleader, which, while I have been accused of having been such in high school (oh geez, no, I was far tooooo uncool for THAT) is still a Very Scary Thought.

It would probably help -- she doesn't go into the office. (She rarely did, and now it's impossible, since there isn't room for her walker. Or much of anything else, for that matter.)

I have found that the arranging a reward for disliked or hard-to-start tasks can help a lot. You provide yourself a motive to push past whatever's blocking you.

Probably; I know I've done that in the past. I just got through a half-hour's worth of slogging by promising myself a break and some LJ time at the end of it. That sometimes works.
