The big news for this week is RainbowCon 1, this coming weekend. But other than that...
Colleen lost her uncle in a car crash. So not exactly a good week. Busy and somewhat rough week at work. Lots of tidying, moving of boxes, and so on. So my back hurt most evenings. Naproxen is my friend.
Finished my taxes, sort of at the last minute. Owed about the same as last year, which was a pleasant surprise, considering that before I started Sunday it was showing about twice that. I could have handled it, but glad I didn't have to.
N and G moved down to their new suite in the basement. It'll be gorgeous when they get moved in. I helped with putting up shelves, but the last two I put up weren't level. Grump.
... and when I couldn't give Naomi a coherently practical reason why I was prioritizing clearing a way to the garage, she said, "Oh. It's an emotional need then. Go ahead." Oh. Yeah; I guess I have emotions these days. And other people can still notice me having them when I can't. Which uttterly fails to surprise me.
Can't think of anything else worthy of mention.
Notes & links:0417Su * up 6:50ish; W=196.4; dishes : there's something stranger going on; xmonad's compile on blackroot is failing, for no obvious reason (and with no error message, just exit 127) Weird. " I found that I was getting this error on Ubuntu 14.04 because I needed to install the 'libghc-xmonad-contrib-dev' and 'libghc-xmonad-dev' packages " - plausible. : The area just to the left of the house-to-garage door might be good for the little unfinished dresser. * 15min: puttering in GR sorting stuff. uncovered the carpet in the cubhouse. : Turns out that dzen on U12.04 is just as downrev as xmobar -- doesn't support inline actions. Works ok if you disable the clickable stuff. Actually, xmobar doesn't seem to work at all, even if you downgrade the config. :P : Turns out that the brown lift chair, which I had concluded was broken, actually seems to work. So it can go downstairs to the playroom. * 1pm district caucus. & Stopped at PLC with N after the caucus. Or rather, after we left -- it was still going on, but as an alternate N didn't have to be there after all delegates and alternates were seated. Picked up steaks, asparagus (which they were pushing heavily) and red potatoes for roasting. Also ice cream. When we got home I found that Kat had made caprese, and that there were two bags of shrooms from the farmer's market. Yum. But I'm pretty wiped. Still have to do taxes. @ Phylogenetic analyses suggests fairy tales are much older than thought * TAXES DONE. Approximated the HSX sales based on what I could remember. Since it came out to less than half what it was showing when I started, and only a little more than half what's in my checking account, I'm ok. Whew! But several pieces of paper, and other items, have gone walkabout. Grumph. ~ RC announcement for mailing list. -> N. posted it. : Caucus notes: May 16-20 filing for PCO 2d wednesday old fauntleroy school building 6:30. County convention 5/1 will be for voting on resolutions and platforms. Delegates not required. 0418Mo * up 6am; W=196.4; laundry * movers come at noon -> well, 3:30ish. But still. Move accomplished. Pretty much. * My other thinkpad keyboard was found and waiting for me on my desk. So I'll be able to use xmonad at work. Also, thanks to EwmhDesktops, I can now use gnome-panel to select workspaces on systems where dzen and xmobar are broken. : Now that the huge pile of boxes and furniture is out of the Great Room, it's possible to see just how big a space it is. : Record high temperature. We hauled out the air conditioners. 0419Tu * up 5:11; W=197.2; laundry, dishes : Another day with high temp. in the 80s. Hottest April on record, so far. : Got home to find that cleaning had been done, and there was a small pile of assorted stuff on my desk. (Pen, stapler, phone chargers, ...) : Colleen's uncle was killed in a car crash; his wife is in the ER. Damn. & Was planning on writing my presentation for Wed (having put it off because taxes). Went to bed early to be with Colleen. 0420We * up 5:50ish; W=196.4; laundry, dishes * Presentation went well. Considering that I wrote the slide deck this morning! Being mostly a code dive helped, of course. : Chrome has some problems under xmonad, notably with popups and fullscreen. I believe there are fixes for both. * 8:30ish: upgrading Trantor to Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial -- do-release-upgrade -d gets you the development version. Since the official release is tomorrow I figure it's safe. Trantor is the test machine -- the only state on it that isn't in git is the browser profiles. (he says, and goes to save his bookmarks) 0421Th * Up 5:15; W=196.6; dishes * Trantor's upgrade worked eventually; it stopped due to errors partway through and I had to do apt-get install --fix-broken; apt-get dist-upgrade mate and gnome flashback both broken, presumably due to config changes. * 3pm Anita Brown (by phone, because I'm not about to spend an hour and a half on the bus for a half-hour appointment) @ Music For Cats Very soothing. * More on the Scala course - had to go back to gnome to get the login and audio working. :P 0422Fr Earth Day * up 6:10; W=195.6; ..., laundry * finished Scala course (lectures only, but also the book) : Rabbit has a job! (Hopefully I'll be able to stop giving Kat an allowance) : Today's Tech Talk speaker not only spoke about open source, but he was recognizably using xmonad as his window manager. Hee! % feeling rather awful -- desperate? who knows? It's been a bad week. But I have a box of cat on my desk. That's something, right? I feel guilty, too, about not being in the rainbow room with Colleen. But... cat. % otoh, I ordered half the cat food in the wrong size. Well, I can split them into portions. Ought to do that with the smaller ones, too.we * 15min: re-arranged gnome-panel on Trantor to put everything on the bottom. 0423Sa * up 0515; W=195.6; Shower, laundry, dishes * 15min: upgrading blackroot. With only 1G of RAM it's a bit marginal, but it works well enough to keep at my bedside for occasional use. With the upgrade, xmobar will have full functionality. -> crashed while upgrading. -> dpkg-configure -a classicmenu-indicator puts a main menu in trayer, so that's a win. Blackroot now having key binding problems. * 15min: more puttering/cleanup in the Great Room. Brought some stuff in from the porch, and rolled up the hexagonal rugs. * moved the last plastic shelf set over to the garage wall * helped N locate and hang wall decorations. : There is, unfortunately, a huge pile of empty boxes blocking the door to the garage. * Dinner with the Sanders campaign staffer who's been staying downstairs for the last week. Music afterwards. (I'll probably miss a few) Bigger On the Inside, Mary Ellen Carter, Lord of the Buffalo, Millennium's Dawn, October Country, Toolmakers, Riverheart, QV, Ship of Stone, Gentle Arms of Eden, Wheelin', Travelers; N solo on Runnymeade, Recessional, and Nemesis & assisted N with minor first aid after G stepped on something sharp and sliced his big toe. Not much damage, all told, but... more excitement than we wanted. 0424Su * up 0730ish; W=195.6; laundry, dishes * 15min: much puttering; consolidating and reorganizing the cubhouse and GR hearth. The ultimate goals are to get out the mic stand bag and the end table, and concentrate most of G's stuff into boxes to go downstairs. (And mine to go back into the cubhouse until I can sort it, but that's for later.) * I've had a box of cat for much of the morning -- when I'm at my desk, anyway. * 15min: cleared out the catlock (the space between the two downstairs apartments and the garage); located the Morroccan tables, packed up most of the recyclable cardboard and as much of the plastic packing materials as I could find. Ouch! But... done. * 15min: finally checked on my taxes -- the e-filed return was accepted. Archived. % I was having trouble saying why I thought tidying the catlock and GR was a priority. N figured out that it wasn't a practical need but an emotional one. Oh. Right. I have emotions now. (That doesn't make it any clearer to me, but it's an interesting data point.) : Kat's using Purple -- Barnard seems to be having battery problems. We have accumulated a considerable stack of laptops; a mix of functional, semi-functional, and non-functional. % 4:30 drifty * Dinner: roasted chicken, broccoli, stove-top stuffing. Went out with Chaos. Also Petco for litter, treats, and (small) catfood cans. * printed Rainbows End Massage gift certificates for g
