Supposedly, the plumbers are coming this morning to put in a new drainpipe for the kitchen. Supposedly we'll even be able to use our garbage grinder.

I'll settle for not having to snake out the pipe every couple of weeks.

One reason why I would never have a garbage disposal is that I've never met one yet that didn't have associated plumbing clogs. Besides, I prefer my garbage in the compost (vegetable matter) or landfill (animal matter) than in the sewage system. I know it's a "paper or plastic" solution for where it ends up, but one place it won't be is clogging my plumbing. Good luck on the new pipe. Hope it works out.

Our plumber declared them a necessary evil.

"Don't grind major items. No bones, no vegetable peels, etc, etc. Only the little bits you can't reasonably scoup out should go down the grinder."

He continued that his regular customers have fewer clogs of any kind if they follow the above. The few random chunks get ground down, and don't form blockages. No regular grinding means no build up in the pipes.
