mdlbearIt's been a week. Got a lot done (for me), including spending all of today packing. And I actually did some singing, in Thursday's Eurofilk zoom circle. It feels like I may finally pushed through whatever weird barrier my brain weasels have set up to keep me from singing.
I haven't been very good about anouncing this, but the household known as the Rainbow Caravan -- me, my sister of choice N, her husband G, and oldest kid m -- are moving to The Hague, in The Netherlands, in October. More info later this week -- I promise! (Unless I fall into another rabbit hole, of course.)
I also may have spent a little much on luggage, because REI was having a Labor Day sale.

Date: 2024-09-11 03:43 am (UTC)Barbara and I visited there in July - first time for me. Barbara had been there before, but not since the '70s. It's a beautiful place. One week, mostly in Amsterdam. This sign tickled my somewhat-juvenile funny bone
We walked a lot. The first day this seemed kind of chaotic, as I had no idea how the right-of-way rules worked between bikes, pedestrians and cars at various types of intersections. Turns out that bikes mostly have precedence over everything else except emergency vehicles. And so long as you go without hesitation when you have the right-of-way, and yield when you don't, everything goes smoothly and no one gets confused.
Trams and trains too. I can definitely see the attraction of living in a proper city without a car.
Then we took the train from Amsterdam to Bremen (Germany), where we had a 15 minute visit in the station with Nadia, who by chance was travelling through on the same day we were. Deutsche Bahn lived up (down?) to their reputation for running late, but it's just as well, if the train from Amsterdam had been on time we probably would have missed connecting with Nadia.
And a nice visit with some old friends of Barbara's, who live in Lilienthal, just outside of Bremen.

Date: 2024-09-11 04:32 am (UTC)I'm looking forward to the walkability -- there are at least five grocery stores less than 2km away. A little farther than I usually walk around here, but it's flat.
The trains, trams, and busses there are also excellent.
