So the Shrub has come out in favor of a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, enshrining bigotry and discrimination in our constitution in a way that hasn't been seen since the founders defined a slave as 3/5 of a person. Luckily, it doesn't appear to have much chance of passing in the Senate -- the intent is purely political, to get more gay-bashing bigots to come out and vote against Democrats.
Back in the early days of the Civil Rights movement, when there were still laws on the books against inter-racial marriage, we called this "playing the race card": accuse your opponent of being a "n----- lover". The principle's the same now that my daughter's girlfriend is being singled out for discrimination because she's gay rather than because she's black. It's still disgusting.
