A power glitch sometime yesterday interacted with some configuration changes I'd made on the gateway, and we ended up with no net access for a while. I only discovered it this morning (see next post), and it took me several hours to diagnose. Luckily [livejournal.com profile] flower_cat and the YD were asleep, and [livejournal.com profile] chaoswolf was off at Silicon helping to run gofers, so nobody else noticed.

I'm still trying to decide how to manage system upgrades -- the Windows 98 boxen have gotten distinctly creaky.

Since we couldn't afford Worldcon this year (and besides, the YD has already started school), we're going to Silicon instead. It's local, so we don't have to stay in the hotel.

Silicon is very small (maybe 400-500 people); we're sharing the San Jose Doubletree with several huge weddings and some other events. Gives it a very different feel from Baycon, which takes over the whole hotel. Biggest advantage is that there's parking.

I have a concert tonight at 9:00pm; I've been spending much of my time working on my setlist and hanging out in the internet lounge borrowing electrons and trying to beat my aging but delightfully compact laptop into something resembling a useable configuration. It's somewhat moot, since I intend to do a clean install on it after I get back to work; meanwhile things are a bit wonky.

There's a room set aside for filking in the evening, but so far it's only had a handful of people in it, so I've been doing a lot more singing than usual, with [livejournal.com profile] flower_cat prodding me to practice. [livejournal.com profile] chaoswolf wants me to record tonight's concert, but I'm darned if I'm going to fight with my recording rig if I don't have to.

Last night at the Masquerade (which, as usual, we didn't attend) we're told that they announced that [livejournal.com profile] flower_cat is going to be Fan GOH next year! Well deserved, in my opinion. Would have been nice for someone from the con to confirm it officially beforehand, though. (There had been some preliminary discussions Friday and yesterday, but I'm not sure whether they just took Colleen's lack of an immediate rejection as a "yes", or decided that a public announcement would make it impossible for her to back down.) Colleen is somewhat apprehensive, but she'll come through OK as usual. No speeches, though.
