Drove up to Menlo Park with
flower_cat to say goodbye to her favorite tree, which succumbed to root rot a couple of days ago. There was even an article in the San Jose Mercury about it.
The tree, an oak, had been growing in the middle of Perry Lane, the little street where Colleen grew up. During that time, in the late 1950's and early '60's, it was also the home of such notables as Ken Kesey and Vic Lovell, which was why the tree rated an obituary on the front page of Section B in the Merc. Some of the tiny cottages on Perry Lane have been replaced by monster houses, but #16, where Colleen lived with her mother, is still there.
She put a bunch of white narcissus from our garden on the place where the tree had been. There were already some flowers planted there, along with a copy of the article and a note saying that the city had already given verbal permission to have the tree replaced. We weren't the only ones who came to say goodbye.
