Hippo, birdie, two ewes...
2007-06-17 06:37 am ...to sdorn!! Have a great one!
Set up a massive file transfer to my shiny new backup drive last night and went to bed; I was rather disturbed to come into the office this morning and find an I/O error on the screen, and the OS unable to find the drive. Gleep!
I took the drive out of the USB enclosure, powered down, put it in
Trantor's case, powered up, and was greatly relieved to find the drive up
and running. A thorough fsck
and a fresh rsync
confirmed that all data was present and accounted for. I'm guessing it
may have been a glitch somewhere in the external box's USB interface or
the cable. Not going to worry about it much. (eta: power-cycling the
drive enclosure didn't work; I didn't try rebooting or power-cycling the
computer with the drive still external; that would probably have worked, I
was just impatient.)
I'm still trying to resist the temptation to do more work on reorganizing my directory tree and setting up the offsite backups.
Rather than hop in the car and drive to my usual walking trail this morning, I got my hat and water bottle out of the trunk and headed over to the Rose Garden a little before 10am.
The air was cool and a little moist -- just right for walking, unlike yesterday's heat. It was a good walk. Encountered a huge crowd of people going the other way around the garden; many were wearing T-shirts that proclaimed them members of the Rose Garden Dog Walking Club. Fun!
I took two turns around the garden (about half a mile, which brings the total up to about three for the walk), then went inside to look, as always, at the Royal Amethyst blooming a little inside the front gate. Feeling a little more nostalgic than usual, I wandered around for a while and sat for a few minutes on one of the benches, content to spend a few minutes gazing at beauty and not thinking about much of anything.
Came back to find that my kids had given me a Father's Day card, and I got
a truly wonderful French press/coffee mug from the chaoswolf.
Altogether a delightful Father's Day so far.
In the afternoon the family (minus the Younger Daughter, who decided to stay home rather than be bored by grown-up conversation) went over to the Ugglas' for barbeque, conversation, and music. Got in a little bit of rehearsal with Joyce and Jordan for the Tres Gique concert at Westercon. Decided regretfully that The Merry Man and his Maid won't be ready in time; I think the next con we'll both be at is probably Consonance. Might do it as a one-shot.
The chaoswolf joined us on "High Barratry", "Stuff that Dreams
are Made Of", and "Rambling Silver Rose" (if I remember correctly).
Definitely has promise.
