Stopped at Central Computer
on the way home and got a new monitor. It's a Samsung 226BW; 22"
diagonal, 1680x1050. So it's a little smaller than what I'm using at work
(1980x1200) but with bigger pixels; by tweaking the monospaced font down
from 18 pixels to 16 I can get two 80x25 terminals across the screen
without overlap, the way I can at work. Courier in this size is a little
spindly, but I think going to reverse video fixes it.
Central was offering a $40 mail-in rebate; Fry's has the same monitor with
a $50 rebate but from a higher base price, so Central came out $5 ahead.
And any day I can do better than shopping at Fry's...
It'll probably take a couple of days' worth of tweaking to get it all
right. And the browser ends up a little bit too far to the right,
considering that the main typing portion of the keyboard is on the left.
Well, if that makes me spend more time in the editor, that's OK.
The one real disadvantage compared to a 1980x1200 monitor is the fact that
I don't get any more tracks vertically in Audacity. But for nearly a
factor of two in price, I think I can live with it for a year or two.
(0911T0658 and here's this morning's Fry's ad with a 20" Samsung, same resolution, about $80 less. I'm OK with that -- I wouldn't be able to drop the font size on that one.)
