raw notes )

A rather unproductive day at work; not really surprising. Mostly spent wondering what I was likely to be working on in the event that I end up staying another month, which seems likely at this point.

Quite a lot of puttering, and a certain amount of cvs-to-git planning. There was a point, a couple of years ago, where I was planning to do a massive cvs-to-git conversion. Then I started moving directories around, as part of my move to dreamhost.com. Now, things are confused. I'm not too concerned; it gives me something to do.

What's really going on, of course, is that I'm avoiding dealing with last year's healthcare receipts. Bleargh.

The muscles in my right shoulder have been hurting for weeks. Probably something to do with a heavy shoulder-bag. Or maybe clicking. Ouch. Naproxen and a muscle relaxant last night don't seem to have helped all that much. Nor does a heating pad. Grump.

Realized yesterday that I haven't done a Thankful Thursday post in far, far too long. Have to do something about that.

A couple of links up there. The best is undoubtedly Linux on a 486 emulator in Javascript, running in your browser! I was astonished at how quickly it boots.

It's been several months since I last did a "Thankful Thursday" -- or any day -- post, and even longer since I was doing them semi-regularly.

So, these days I'm thankful for...

  • A sense of humor that's sufficiently wacked-out that I can find amusement in major inconvenience, minor havoc, and my own lapses of memory.
  • Good Drugs, likewise.
  • My moderately-good health, that gets me through "that kind of day".
  • Colleen.
  • My sister of choice, and her fiancĂ©e. And how good it feels to be referred to as a brother-in-law of choice.
  • Whimsy, and the useful side of nonsense and fantasy.
  • git, ssh, audacity, and emacs.

Baffled is more like it. Baffled, and biting my tongue. I mean, people carrying signs that say "The End Is Nigh" have been a cartoon staple for as long as I can remember, and presumably long before that. I guess the only reason I'm not making fun of them beyond the occasional wry comment is that I find other people embarrassing themselves acutely painful rather than funny.

How can anyone possibly believe that crap?

Just like every other time, some people have wrecked their lives, in the mistaken belief that tomorrow really wasn't coming. It's sad.

It's also rather horrifying, to realize that these are the kind of people who overwhelmingly vote Republican, or the equivalent in other countries. You'd think that blind acceptance of total nonsense was something that the conservatives are actively trying to encourage.

Oh. Right.

These are the kind of people who are going to go right back to wrecking the educational system, the health care system (what little there was of it), and the federal and state budgets so that the 500 richest people can keep getting richer, and the 500 biggest corporations can keep getting bigger. It's enough to make me wish they were right about Judgement Day.

OK, so maybe I'm not baffled. Or sad. Maybe I'm just angry.
