Mixed feelings
2005-04-03 09:59 amThe Pope is dead. He died at home, peacefully, with dignity, after a long and productive life, which in the end is all that anyone could ask of the universe. It's a little worrying to note that he was only a few months older than my mother.
He was a man of peace, and did much to bring about the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe. On the other hand, many of his views -- on homosexuality, on the rights of women, on birth control and abortion, on the right to die with dignity -- were repugnant to me, and he came down firmly on the side of the religious right on many of the most divisive issues in the US today.
On the whole, I have very mixed feelings about his passing. Perhaps it will be best to just leave it at that.
