Full speed sideways

chaoswolf has already mentioned,
flower_cat will be going in for surgery sometime in the next couple of weeks to get her hernia fixed. Hopefully they'll also check and see whether anything else is wrong. Everyone, especially Colleen and
super_star_girl, is rather anxious.
Meanwhile we're going to have a yard-cleanup day thisSaturday (edit) Sunday, hopefully getting rid of some of the junk in the back yard as well as getting the weeds out of the front. There will be beer, soft drinks (I almost typed "software"), and pizza. I expect to have a really sore back before the day is over. By coincidence, our trash-hauling company is putting out dumpsters in the neighborhood for "spring cleaning" Saturday morning, and we expect to make good use of them. (edit) Even though the yard party is Sunday, anyone wanting to work on Saturday will be greeted with thanks and appreciation.
And next Thursday our group is presenting at our annual research review. That's where the head of corporate research and a couple of high-level planners come over from Japan to find out what we've been doing with their money for the last year. The really interesting and useful part of the process for us, though, is the dry runs, which are open to everyone in the lab. It's a great way to find out what's going on in the other groups. When I joined the lab in '92, I started on a Friday; our group's review was on the following Tuesday. Needless to say I didn't have anything to present, but I sure learned a lot!
