A Pleasant Weekend
2003-06-15 11:14 pm(apart from worries about Emmy's school transfer)
These are the high points:
Yesterday I spent most of the morning doing yard work and general cleanup -- our garbage company was having a dumpster day, so I was able to get rid of some (not all) of the clutter in the back yard, including the dead fluorescent fixtures I replaced in the kitchen, some cardboard boxes, and the remains of the driveway gate.
Yesterday afternoon Mom and I went out to Southern Lumber, which is my favorite lumberyard in the area, in search of lignum vitae. Ended up with ebony, after a store employee pointed out that lignum vitae was very oily, and the oil might be toxic. I'm pretty sure ebony isn't, since it's used for guitar fingerboards and other musical components.
The application is a throwing stick for Mom's dog. She's chewed up the oak ones... I had the mill at Southern split a piece about 1" x 2" x 6" long roughly down the middle, then finished the two resulting sticks at home with tablesaw, block plane, and file. Worked out pretty well.
This morning we (that is, Mom, the
flower_cat and I) went out to Santana Row, a nearby shopping street, mainly so that Mom could buy me a Father's Day lunch. The kids stayed home entertaining one another. We went out to a fantastic central Mexican restaurant; they serve locally-made tortillas, pollo con salsa mole (chicken with mole sauce -- actually mostly chocolate and chile), etc. It's all served tapas-style, in small portions that one shares family style.
After a light supper (cheese, apples, pears, baguette, guacamole, chips) we sat down to read and watch Cats (which it turns out that Mom had never seen) and Animusic, which is magical. The
chaoswolf watched Animusic and was suitably impressed.
Remarkably, the kids have been basically good all weekend.
chaoswolf's high school graduation is tomorrow afternoon.
