Yeah; owning your own domain is definitely the way to go. For cheap web hosting you can't easily beat dreamhost.com -- their minimum account is something like $7.95/month for as many domains as you want, and enough storage that you can do backups to it as long as you're not doing much audio or video.
We recently switched our DSL service from AT&TPacBellSBC AT&T to sonic.net. About $10/month more for 15 times the bandwidth.
