My three home servers live in a closet in the "office", and are connected via a KVM switch to the monitor on "my" part of the desk (which has two switchable inputs; the other is my desk"top" Linux box) and a keyboard that lives under the desk.
One of the servers (the firewall, as it turned out) was "beeping" continuously and alarmingly, whereupon
chaoswolf turned it off (not knowing any other way to shut it up) only to discover that internet access went away. Well, yeah. She called me.
I had her turn the machine back on and hold the phone next to it -- sounded like the beep you get when you hit the backspace key at the beginning of a line. So I told her where the keyboard was and what to do with it. Sure enough.
I've been thinking about a second KVM switch for the desk...
