Apparently cell phones are no longer immune to telemarketers. And of course we now have to pay for the privilege of being spammed. Lovely.

Time to update my entries in the National Do Not Call Registry.

And I'm putting potential contacts on notice now: if spam starts to be a problem, I'm going to be leaving my phone off when I'm not expecting a call.

Update: -- that number has been in the registry since 2004.

The two downsides are:
1. I don't think sms counts as a call so the DNC registry won't help.
2. At least with my phone, if it's off the SMS messages get queued and will still come through next time my phone turns on & connects to the network.

If that number is in the registry, you can report the sender to, I think, the FTC, which can levy a fine. There aren't enough cybercops, but egregious abuse is punished. It is also illegal to spam SMS via the cellphone network, but not via the e-mail gateways; it is a useful trick to change your e-mail name, and T-Mobile, at least supports it.
