It occurred to me rather suddenly last night that here I am, a 61-year-old, notoriously reclusive and socially inept computer nerd, attempting to dispense avuncular advice on relationships, marriage, and psychology over the internet. And in person, I might add.

This strikes me as highly improbable, totally out of character, mildly amusing, and more than a little mind-boggling. I feel a little as though, after many years of playing an assortment of jesters and other fools, I have finally moved up to playing Polonius.

Those of us who are socially inept come by such wisdom as we finally acquire the *hard* way. Once we get it into our thick heads, we are sometimes able to interpret the mundane world to those of us who think more like we do . . .

I once was asked by a pretty young thing, what she should do when she finally got her current object of desire into bed. Said object of desire was another PYT.


"Ummm. I can describe some fantasies to you. Some porn seniarios, but in reality... How many details do you think a straight middle aged guy in a long term monogomous relationship can tell you?"

I then proceeded into my "you have a heart, a mind, fingers, mouth, skin, etc, etc, etc. Use them all." speach.

Yup. Every once in a while I realize how different my mind is from most people's. When I meet someone who thinks like me they're usually younger and badly in need of advice.

*chuckle* -- haven't gotten that one yet, but it wouldn't surprise me if I did. And I'd probably give a similar speech in response.

That, and point them at the appropriate friends...

The joke is that, although bits of that speech are usually quoted out of context as good advice, and some of it is, Polonius is a pompous old fool and his "advice" needs to be heavily discounted.

I caught it after I commented. I'm a bit slow sometimes.

Off topic again; I think I've fixed the leak in the shower head upstairs, but I don't think the tape is really waterproof.

I can check later. If it's plumber's tape it's just very thin teflon; it's waterproof. It's possible you didn't make a good seal, or you may have misunderstood how to use it.

What you do is unscrew the joint that's leaking, tightly wrap one layer of tape around the threads, and screw it back together. Plumber's tape is *not* meant to go on the outside of the joint.
