I'm a loner, maybe not by nature and not by choice, but I got used to it. I think it took me two or three decades to learn what Colleen knew from the start: that the safest place in the world is in my lover's arms.

So true. That's how I knew who I wanted to marry.

That's a beautiful way to feel with someone. I envy-without-resentment you for it.

Although I think I understand the feeling that "the safest place in the world is in my lover's arms", I've never actually felt it myself. The last time I can remember feeling safe because of someone else's presence was when I was a little girl, with my parents. In the past, I often found myself being viewed as the one providing the safe place for someone else. In my marriage, neither of us takes either role, because we both have a strong tendency towards self-reliance in all things. But I think it would be very nice to feel that sense of safety in someone's arms...

If I think too hard about it, I could find myself wishing I felt that way...
