Catching Up
2004-03-15 08:56 pmToday the
flower_cat learned that she didn't get the hotel job she was hoping for. She also learned that it was much more of a management position than she had been expecting, so all's well and so on. Not that a second income wouldn't have come in handy about now, but she's keeping her resumé out there, so we'll see.
I'm not going to say much about Saturday's party, since
chaoswolf gives a pretty good account. Many of the regulars were missing this time, but we had about 7 filkers in attendence, so we cleared the random conversations out of the living room and set up a circle, which ran most of the evening. Truly fine singing. At
flower_cat's request I trotted out "Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts" (and embarassingly had to dash back to the bedroom to retune and grab a copy of the words -- I had completely blanked on the first line).
Last week was mostly a waste.
And it's gotten a bit late to say much about the Saturday and Sunday of Consonance. Being Toastmaster was both harder (I'm not, it turns out, very good at keeping things running on time and telling performers how many songs they have time for) and easier than I expected. I did manage to come up with a semi-coherent introduction for everyone, even if it was just "so-and-so is a person whose music I haven't heard nearly enough of". A couple of them may even have passed for witty if you weren't being too particular. Anyway, nobody complained, at least not to me.
My two theme circles went pretty well. Saturday morning was "Poetry Set to Music", which was mainly an excuse for hauling out "The Cap and Bells" (Yeats) and "The Owl and the Pussycat" (Lear). Sunday morning was "Favorite Songs by Others", which was my excuse for singing "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" (Bogle) and "Ship of Stone" (Simpson), which I keep pushing for a Pegasus nomination every chance I get.
The Interfilk auction deserves a mention. I went prepared to spend somewhere over $100 on a one-off CD (as a future Interfilk guest, I felt that I had to do my part), but wimped out at $140. The wenching was great fun to watch, and occasionally well over the top. The high point was Franklin slinging Kathleen Sloan over his shoulder and carrying her out of the room. No idea what happened out in the hall, but she posted a winning bid when she came back.
The evening open filk circles were better than average. Lots of excellent songs, not too big, very few duds. Not nearly enough caffeine, though; I conked out at 2:45 on Saturday. Must be getting old. I didn't notice any hill...
