mdlbearAlong with the taxes, I've been puttering around with enough other things to keep myself from going crazy (some might argue that it's too late for that...). Probably the only really noteworthy one is doing some long-needed work on my song page. It now has licenses (though the song pages themselves don't, yet).
Much of the morning was spent setting up the machine I'm actually running TaxCut on. It's the machine that I recently did a clean Win98 install on, intending it for use as the![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
flower_cat's machine. But I hadn't installed all of her favorite software yet, so it hadn't been used. This was great, since I wanted a machine that didn't have any spyware on it yet.
In addition to TaxCut and my data for the last several years, I installed CygWin and CygWin/X (mainly to give the machine something to do while I was washing the dishes). Hadn't tried X before, but the install was smooth and it seemed to work well enough. Finally, before plunging in to the taxes for most of the day, I set up my little media box with nothing but power and ether, to make sure I could control it through X. I can -- in fact I'm using it now. The tax machine is just an X terminal at this point. The magic incantation is, of course,
Tomorrow, of course, it's back on my head in the tax pool.

X :1 -query harmony&Finally this evening, in a fit of bored geekiness, I made myself a very short CAT-5 jumper to go between the 100baseT switch and the 10baseT hub on my rack. Having a folded-up 1m cable there has been bothering me for months. As usual, one of the ends took me two tries to get right.
Tomorrow, of course, it's back on my head in the tax pool.
