We spent the afternoon with a small number of drop-in guests and our usual Easter ritual: watching Wicker Man and eating barbecued rabbit.

Finally turned the crank on [livejournal.com profile] chaoswolf's taxes and found that, not surprisingly, she didn't owe anything. Had an hour or so of panic on discovering that cashing in the zero-coupon bond from her college fund was reported as a capital-gains transaction (ouch!), but some research on Google determined that the way taxes get paid on it (the OID rules) makes the basis equal to the redemption value. Whew!

The Younger Daughter, whose taxes are still reported on our form, still presents a few open questions. I'll have to talk to Mom's financial advisor tomorrow. Other than that, ours are done.

Finally figured out the right way to get my new 120GB drive properly partitioned on an old system: tell the BIOS that it isn't there, and use the copy of cfdisk on the System Rescue CD to do the deed (since it's the only partitioning program I know of that automagically computes the right number of cylinders after you lie to it about the number of heads on the disk (to keep the BIOS happy). Also did some work on the backup scripts, adding stuff to back up the gateway machine using ssh (since it's heavily firewalled and so can't mount the backup drive via NFS like everything else).
