Understood! How dare you lose it? It was valuable! How awful! Did you not realize that your losing this item was the single greatest cause of our current state of natural disasters - I mean the oil spill and all the duckies dying, and the volcanic ash that is infesting our lungs at this very moment. Well I am glad that you have owned up to your evilness so that we can now proceed to shun you. No, no it is NOT ok. But I forgive you.

I'm thinking it's a holdover from the stiff upper lip days when people were supposed to say the nice thing, and then that would be some magical cure to it all.

Partly. There simply doesn't seem to be any good, short way to express the combined message of "I'm sorry to hear that you're distressed over this; I hope things work out; if there's anything I can do, please let me know; maybe it would help to take a deep breath and look around before doing anything else; everybody makes mistakes, it isn't just you; I love you anyway."
