So, I've been working on a demo that involves explaining to people why stuff kept on outside servers should be encrypted. This morning, shortly after reading this article by Brad Templeton about GMail, what should drop into my lap but Driftnet. It's a Linux port of the Mac program EtherPEG; either way it's a pretty good demo.

The web pages pointed to here are work safe. The software, in most work environments, could very well get you fired. Only try this at home! (And maybe not even there...)

Reminds me of the time I was debugging the Ethernet interface on a vxWorks system at my last job, and saw POP3 packets going by, unencrypted, with some really egregiously guessable passwords of my coworkers. That could be another fun utility: sniff packets as they go by for login/password information, and start announcing which users have inesecure passwords on how many sites...
