Pretty good day. Busy, with only a brief walk, but I got a reasonable amount done at work. The bullpen is great for group communication, but lousy for concentrating on programming when someone else is having a conversation.

The YD landed hersef a job -- selling Cutco knives. Tupperware with an edge, basically. Not something I could ever handle, but maybe she'll be good at it.

Probably the best news of the day: Groklaw - Stewart Rules: Novell Wins! CASE CLOSED!. In other good news of the "why the heck did it take so long" variety, Starbucks offers free Internet access now. Which pretty much leaves high-end hotels the main holdouts.

Uh-oh... that Cutco thing is an MLM scam. My son's college roommate thought it would be a good way to make some money, but it turned out to be a way to lose money. First, the new representative is required to buy a kit of display knives and other promotional materials. They also have to pay every expense (transportation, etc.) they incur in the process of trying to sell the product. The profit margin on what they sell is rather small... and how many of your friends and relatives want to buy kitchen cutlery? (To be fair, the knives are decent quality, although a bit overpriced for what they are.) The whole operation is just barely legal. Your daughter would probably make more money working at Hot Topic :-(

I am in agreement with [livejournal.com profile] acelightning in the respect that it is a scam, and that the only reason I didn't have this job when I went to college was because I knew flat out that it was. It was so similar to the Bankers L&C Insurance job that I decided it was in my best interest not to. Dropping out of school long enough to work at BookBuyers had one advantage only: It gave me my first practical work experience.

Otherwise, it's scam city across the board. Emmy never listens to anyone older than her, except maybe her boyfriend.

I take it she doesn't listen to you, either?

So tell her a crazy old lady with purple hair said so :-)
(Actually, it's even mentioned in the Wikipedia article you linked to.)

In the Groklaw article, a thanks to Morrison & Foerster (law firm) is sent out. I found their domain name when I was working for an IT recruiter who's worked with them, and I laughed my head off until I coughed and choked. I can't for the life of me understand why they went with MoFo.com, given what it's slang for...

I do have a couple of Cutco knives, but it's their scissors I was after & bought. They are supposed to be strong enough to cut pennies, but they fail in the cutting heavy plastic packaging department. It IS extraordinarily hard to get those damned things open, but I expected greater ease of doing so with these scissors. However, they are the only tool I have that DOES open them.
