I rode my bike for about an hour and a half -- well, counting a 10-20 minute rest stop. Basically the proposed commute route, taking Taylor to the Guadalupe River Trail. There's a really harrowing underpass on Taylor, and my lowest gear was barely adequate for the last underpass before the airport. At which point it turned into a dirt road, and I turned around. I'm not going to be commuting by bike any time soon, I suspect. I was pretty well wiped out the rest of the day.
I also got the new WiFi router configured, as a pure access point and 5-port switch. Not the most secure configuration, but by far the most convenient. And got the old MiniITX box back up and configured as a basic desktop, for use by guests. And made a beef chuck roast and salad for dinner.
And sang for Naomi, Colleen, and (house guest) Eileen.
Maybe it's not too surprising that I slept until 11am this morning.
Lots of good links under the cut.

Date: 2010-07-28 05:45 am (UTC)I wouldn't want to have that underpass as part of my commute, and I'm generally pretty comfortable with riding in traffic. I just did a little poking around with street view, and it looks like you are well and truly hosed for bike commute routes. San Jose appears to have completely dropped the ball on providing viable routes across the tracks.
The only thing I can think of would be to take the bus into down town San Jose, and then ride the trail from there. Assuming they've got it more or less finished.
When I was little Taylor St. was on the route from our house to my grand parents house on N. 2nd street. No underpass then, but a grade level crossing across a whole bunch of tracks, probably more then than now. The crossing was manned, there were always way too many trains standing around for an automatic signal to have a chance, and more often than not we'd have to wait. Which was fine with me. The guards had cute little shacks at the edge of the intersection to get out of the weather. There were still a sprinkling of steam engines in service at the time, and having one of them come by was a treat. Looking back on it, I suspect my father drove us that way for the train watching.
