Well, I finally got up the nerve to run my little "smash all the user IDs so as not to conflict with current usage" script, and it worked perfectly as far as I can tell. Should have done it a couple of weeks ago.

There were one or two loose ends to clean up, then I rebooted the fileserver just to be sure all the processes got restarted with the right IDs. The main reason for doing this is because RedHat starts normal user IDs at 500 (with system for installed packages running from 100 and 499), and Debian starts them at 1000. But on my system, which started out on Slackware in 1994 or thereabouts, user IDs started at 100. Needless to say, this problem has been known for a long time.

Well, time to go to bed.
