% Colleen's loss of mobility since she broke her arm is very scary.
Walking with the cane instead of the walker scares her, so she doesn't
walk as much, and her legs get weaker. Badness.

Any day that includes a three-mile walk can't be all bad; yesterday was mostly good. I got quite a lot done at work, too.

On the flip side, Colleen's loss of mobility since she broke her arm less than two weeks ago is scary. She feels off-balance, especially with pain meds, so she walks a lot less. Which of course makes the problem worse, because her leg muscles weaken from underuse. We're working on it, but it's hard and, as I said, scary.

Some good links up in the notes. Lots of cool stuff at The Library of Halexandriah.

I'll ask

because you've admitted to occasional denseness -- Is Colleen not asking for as much help as she needs? Maybe she'd walk more if she had a spotter, but doesn't want to put you (and friends) out in addition to everything else she has to have help with. The only answer to that is pro-active help. "You need to get up; I'll spot".

Another thought, which is something I use: Kelly Bliss has a bunch of exercise videos for people of limited mobility. I used the "seated medium intensity". She is a large-sized exercise therapist, and she works all the muscles well, without putting stress on them or making you stand up. Which I rather like. :-) That may help Colleen independently keep her muscle tone up until she has both arms to help with the walker.

Kelly is available at kellybliss.com, and she has not paid me to make this endorsement (g)

Lots of cool stuff at The Library of ♓alexandriah.*

Mebbe so, but the home page just looks like a load of New Age wackitude like some of the stuff my wife's cousin subscribes to. First paragraph verbatim:
♓alexandria* is a Synthesis of new physics, sacred geometry, ancient and modern history, multiple universes & realities, consciousness, the Ha Qabala and ORME, extraterrestrials, corporate rule and politics, law, order and entropy, trial by jury, astronomy, monetary policy, scientific anomalies, religion and spirituality, and a whole host of other subjects ranging from astrology and astrophysics to superstrings and sonoluminesence to biblical and geologic histories to numerology, the Tarot, and creating your own reality.
Right. But why bother, since it's all going to end this year, or next, or whenever the Mayan calendar needs another digit? >/irony<

* The second paragraph explains -- for some very low value of "plain" -- why the first character of the name is the zodiacal symbol for Pisces.

There are definitely leg exercises you can do while seated to help her get back muscle strength. But I agree she should talk to a physical therapist about this. The sooner the better, in my opinion, since strength she hasn't lost yet she won't need to gain back.
