: as of close of business, no followup on $CLUELESS_IT_PERSON besides an ack

myself thinking about a suitably scathing email to send if I still haven't
heard anything by noon tomorrow.

Not a very good day, despite finishing something -- on time -- at work, getting a bonus check and a raise (infinitely more than what I got over the last 2 years), and a walk (postponed from a worked-through lunch hour to just before I went home).
The main event was a particularly clueless IT person at work, who evidently thinks that everyone in the company is a stupid windows user like herself and the rest of the IT department. Nevermind that some people in engineering were using Unix when she was in grade-school. If not diapers.
I may recount the entire saga in a separate post, because it deserves it, but suffice it to say that the next time I get an email from somebody in IT asking everybody in the company for their email and workstation passwords, I'm going to expect it to be followed by either an instantaneous apology and retraction from their manager, a very contrite letter of resignation, or somebody's head on a pike.
I was seething and stressing all late afternoon and much of the evening; even a 2-mile walk and a bunch of Dave Carter music videos didn't help much. I'm really not sure why -- it's ludicrous, and I got quite a lot of amusement mentally composing scathing emails. I guess because keeping at it instead of cursing, laughing, and moving on keeps me angry and stressed-out. Likely, that.
Anyway, there are a reasonable number of links in the notes; the prize for the best idea going to Jim Keller's suggestion to rename "sexual orientation" to "romantic orientation". Because when you come down to it, it's not about who we have sex with, it's about who we fall in love with.
And a happy one-Neptunian-year anniversary to our solar system's coldest gas giant.

Yes, I'm being cynical, why do you ask?

Date: 2011-07-16 07:10 pm (UTC)When Oberon Zell started his "Grey School of Wizardry" and was setting up the website, much of the staff was clueless about the internet in general and security in particular. (If you didn't see it then, I don't think I can properly express the horrors... black background, yellow-orange serif text in a 480-pixel column in the center. The whole site was designed in Frontpage.)
Staffers kept asking him about their login info (because the webdesigner wasn't going to be involved in actual management of the site; he'd just set it up and Oberon would deal with the day-to-day stuff), and O. got tired of all the individual emails, so he sent a message out to the staff email list, hosted on Yahoo, with everyone's passwords.
Everyone on staff had access to everyone else's accounts, plus all the student accounts. Anyone could edit anyone else's information, classes, or passwords.
I spent a lot of my short time at Greyschool boggling at the total lack of security awareness.
