Of Audacity and Mail

mdlbear_albums, I got recording working on my DeMuDi system last night. Turns out that the problem was a group permission problem -- the "record" user, or anyone else who wants to use sound, has to be in the "audio" group. Duh. Also, in order to use any program that records using the old OSS sound devices (like the popular and fairly simple audacity, which we were planning to use) you have to turn off the jack connection server.
On the down side, this morning I logged in as myself and discovered that RedHat and Debian have different numbers for the "mail" group. (The user ID is the same; I'm assuming RH does it the way they do for compatibility with the BSD world, since mail works ok for me at work.) This is going to take some hacking -- I'm used to just sharing my mail spool around via NFS. I may need to switch cold turkey to Debian.
Side note: join
mdlbear_albums to see how my recording project is progressing, and my thoughts on what to do first.
