Wednesday was a pretty good day, though I didn't take a walk. I drove home toward a gorgeous full moon rising, with wild geese flying overhead. You know, I should have been suspicious at that point.

In the evening, [livejournal.com profile] jilara brought over the yukata that she had taken home to hem, and I found its belt tucked away at the bottom of one sleeve. It's lovely.

Thursday morning I got in to work and was greeted by $BOSS and $CFO, and the news that I'd been laid off. Along with two other researchers in my building, and at least two three people in Menlo Park. Plus two from Japan who decided to leave the company rather than go back.

Public service announcements:

  • New tag: 8.3%
  • Party tomorrow at Grand Central Starport. I will have copies of my resume.
  • I am currently looking for work in the San Jose and Seattle areas. Please address job-related correspondance to steve@savitzky.net or ssavitzky@gmail.com.
  • I will be available to start work any time after April 1st

Felt very restless yesterday evening. Should have taken a walk.

Wow. Sorry to hear about the layoff but at least they're not showing you the door same-day with no severance. Silver linings...

Anyway, good luck to you!

I am feeling very restless myself. All those stress hormones I imagine.

I'm so sorry to hear how widespread it was. I didn't realize they were letting researchers go. :( I am pretty sure Medicare > Cobra. At least I have always been on Adobe's health plan. But we are still in shock here too.

meep; sorry to hear that. thought: I think startups in the area tend to recruit more from networking than the traditional route - maybe try the Stanford BASES mailing list or similar?

Sixty five in less than a week? All the retirement people I've talked to say you should have signed up for Medicare 3 months ago. Seriously, get the paper work started NOW.

Just saw your unhappy news and wanted to offer hugs and sympathies. I don't like Thursdays. Even when they're dressed up in thankful wrapping, you just can't trust 'em.

I used to have a friend named Siri*. When I saw "Cringely » Siri’s big brother from Google", my first thought was "No, Siri's big brother is named Dan." ;)

*No drama, she just moved away and we lost touch.

Well, I'm sorry to hear that. :(

I don't know how the setup is out where you are, but my membership on linkedin.com has lead to a number of contents. If you like, I can send you an invite to http://careers.stackoverflow.com/. I'm also a member on http://geekli.st/, but I couldn't say what it's good for yet, as I've been a bit too busy to look into it.

Good luck!

Okay, I sent you the careers invite to the gmail account. As for the geekli.st, I'm not sure entirely how that works - I signed up on my own, and they eventually promoted me to live person. :)

I just sent a message with a long list of companies to try in the Seattle area.

I use a notecard-based system for the companies to check out. If you're up in the Seattle area, let me know; I'll bring the Giant Pile of Company notes.

Best wishes in your job search.

Ah, hell. Sorry to hear you were laid off.

Seattle...it's almost as expensive as San Jose, and the weather is much worse. Might want to take a look at Portland.

I am so sorry I missed this. No matter why it happens, it always hurts.

I hope you'll find something even better waiting for you...
