Done yesterday (20120418 We)
2012-04-19 09:42 amI spent most of yesterday on job-search-related stuff, and although that includes a lot of time looking for people on linkedin and creating an account on facebook, it also included a webinar on effective networking. No, those are not unrelated. Several job sites tap your facebook network to find contacts.
Yes, I'm way out of my comfort zone. I'm still waiting for my Wile E. Coyote moment.
Also went to a presentation on 401K plans; only mildly useful, but I can still probably make some helpful changes. And set up three medical appointments for early June.
Hmm. I see no links in the notes today. Must have been busy.
0418 We
* up 6:40; W=194.4; d, n, t; laundry, dishes, exercise, light
* humira
* 9:15 start leaving for LHH
* 10am 401K presentation Kiet La of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney
Roth conversion has a 5-year holding period. _absolutely_ not useful.
Talks about a variable annuity. :P Guaranteed growth; need to check what
mine is. MetLife guarantees 5%. -> talk not particularly useful.
-> suggestion: look at nonprofits
: needed reboot to get NetworkManager to work properly :(
* 12:30-2pm EFFECTIVE NETWORKING - The Power of Networking
WEBINAR: Milestones 6 & 7. Learn the SMART approach to networking which
provides insights into your existing network of friends, family and
colleagues as well how to expand your circle of contacts.
: Cisco WebEx sucks. 10-digit meeting code, crappy menus/UI.
800 numbers not toll-free on cell :P Next time use 6609. Actually, I'm
probably going through WiFi, so no problem.
->tapping in to the *unadvertised* job market.
Relationship networking: everyone you know & talk to. Share marketing
plan, target list (except with insiders & hiring managers, of course)
When networking use the marketing plan, not the resume: looking for
information/advice/suggestions/contacts, not a job. SMART script.
Practice saying the scripts out loud. Prepare questions in advance.
SELL script with hiring managers (but informational meeting, not
interview) - E=explore their needs. Doesn't matter whether they have a
job opening or not. L=link your benefits to their needs.
Set up a tracking system. Follow up.
"I really (would appreciate|appreciated) your advice"
: aha! treat referrals that don't look like job prospects as networking
contacts. So even if they're not hiring, it gets my name and skill set in
front of them. And if the company _is_ hiring, it makes figuring out
where I would fit in something that happens on _their_ side.
* Career Fairs. Nametags. A custom nametag could stand out. Put it on the
right side of your body (audience left) since that's where people look first.
* set up app't with Dr. Reed, Dr. Rogers in early June
* set up physical in early June
* set up account on FB ("Stephen Savitzky") ssavitzky Debating a "Steve Savitzky"
account. May be better to do that as a band page.
* good talk with Andy (at Google)
