Some work on self-assessment, more tweaking of the resume and various profiles, conversations about hard topics, and some tasty cooking. Wonderful hang-out time with Naomi and Colleen. One walk, and a lot of puttering. Lots of links. Which means I spent too much time on the web.
Saturday night I went out on the porch with Naomi to look at the "super moon". It was gorgeous and serene.
In other words, not a very productive weekend. Goal for today is to finish the self-assessment around career change.
Dice.com insists on a full street address. This means that they're always going to be showing me jobs in the San Jose area. Foo.
We sat down and realized that we really can't afford to maintain the YD down here for a year while we're up in Seattle. So we're back to looking at 3-bedroom apartments. If we'd had a chance to think it through, we might not have decided to move -- but that would have required finding a job quickly. The money will stretch farther in Seattle.
I still don't know my bottom line.
Amazingly enough, I keep running into people on my flist who haven't read The Spoon Theory by Christine Miserandino. Go read. It's about hidden disabilities, and I guarantee you know somebody who's dealing with that stuff; for whom counting spoons is a daily challenge. And along those lines, here's How To Illustrate Wheelchairs In Comic Books
WANT: Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. First Android tablet I've seen that really does what I want at a price I can afford.
Anybody using Huntsy: A Dashboard for Your Job Search? Looks interesting, though I haven't decided yet whether it's worth the trouble.

Date: 2012-05-07 10:52 pm (UTC)Our little startup erotica company is looking for a Drupal developer. (And soon we will have money to throw into the search, which will probably make it go much faster.) So I went to one of the job-search sites and clicked the "interested in hiring" button (or whatever it was), selected the "free trial" option (which doesn't give names or contact info for the results. I put in "web developer" in the title and "drupal" in the skills, and said "gimme people looking for this job within 50 miles of Oakland."
First entry was someone who lives in Florida. Who's not interested in relocating.
Next was someone in Carmel.
I'm certainly not going to pay money for this service.

Date: 2012-05-11 09:39 am (UTC)A 7" tablet is definitely the best combination of Big Enough to be useful and small enough to be truly portable. And you can't go wrong with Samsung.
The Price is what I paid for my Acer. The prices are really coming down on the tablets, aren't they?
First Present for when you get the next job.
Good Luck on the job hunt.
PS When you do get a tablet, I know lots of useful programs to have on it. Like a better calendar (I like Business Calendar) and Evernote (a nice way to organize things from home to tablet). You'll have to see what Samsung gives you and how useful it all is.

Date: 2012-05-07 04:13 pm (UTC)Also, a quick comment about 3 bedroom apartments: bizarrely enough I've occassionally seen situations where 2 smaller apartments (2br + a studio) cost less than a 3 bedroom, esp if the person in the studio can bring their laundry to the bigger apartment. So it's worth checking to see whether that's the case in San Jose.
Lastly: Does the full address dice.com requires absolutely have to be your home address? Does it pass it on to employers to mail you at? If not, is there any reason you can't lie to it, to get it to show you jobs in the area you want?

Date: 2012-05-07 06:55 pm (UTC)I'm actually looking around Seattle, but the same thing applies, obviously. (I just looked at studio apartment rents in San Jose -- they start about where a 2-bedroom is in Seattle.)
I'm planning to switch my dice.com address to a friend's. I don't know whether they pass it to employers, but they definitely use it to define your search area.
