On Tuesday one of the UPSs in the server closet gave me a long BEEEEP and lit its "replace battery" light. Unfortunately there's no way to tell the stupid device that the replacement is on order, so it beeps again every 9 hours just to make sure we noticed. And APC calls it a "smart" UPS! Luckily the replacement was only $25, with another $10 for tax and shipping.
This particular UPS is the one my main fileserver is on; I'm debating getting another to fill in, since I'm short one or two these days anyhow, ever since someone plugged a vacuum cleaner into the one in Emmy's room. And in any case it'll be a good opportunity to take the server down and put Debian on it.
Speaking of which, I've been happily using Debian Sarge on my desktop both at home and at work for about a week now.
