We had eight people for Thanksgiving -- the three residents, Naomi and her kids, and Chaos and her BF. I made the turkey; the kids and Chaos peeled the potatoes, the YD cut them up, I mashed them, and Colleen made the dressing. The YD had made pumpkin pie the night before. Yum. We have a fridge full of leftovers; a 20-lb bird, a huge bowl of dressing, and a 10-lb bag of potatoes will do that. That's ok.

We do have to remember that the turkey takes more like 10 minutes/lb when it's not stuffed. I used the meat thermometer and cooked it to 165; there were a cuple of spots that were just barely not umdercooked, but it was all tender and juicy.

Gratitude in the next post.

Having to squeeze 8 people into the living room made for a good excuse for cleaning. I put several boxes of books onto shelves, and stacked the remaining boxes (mostly not books) along the walls, with only a smallish tower left standing at the end near the desk. We set up our folding chairs, and it worked.

I worked 3 hours from home yesterday, which was enough to compensate for the time I took off Monday for a dentist appointment, but not for the two days' worth of unpaid vacation. :(

Working from home will get easier, now that I have the RSA software token working for VPN access. It uses Wine, but the app works, so I'm not complaining. VPN isn't working yet, because I neglected to bring home the how-to documents. but I'm hopeful.

I've been sleeping altogether more than I'd like, and not all that well. Thursday night especially -- I crashed a little before 10pm, woke up at 1:30 with my left knee painfully locked up and covered with sweat; went back to sleep and didn't get up until 9. Apparently I needed the sleep.

My Nexus 7 arrived Wednesday, and was waiting for me when I got home. Cool. A little heavy, and I'm not certain it's going to be readable enough to serve as a phone book, but definitely a slick piece of gear. I'm loving the soft keyboard, which combines click and swipe action; I'm going to install the backport on my phone.

That reminds me; I still have to upgrade the phone to Android 4.0 (ICS).

I really should spend the rest of the day sorting stacks of paper, some of which is important. Donwanna.

  * My Nexus 7 has shipped, and arrived in Seattle this evening. The Lenovo
    keyboard should arrive next week, along with a lot of other stuff.
  * 15min: cleared box of Readme, mostly emptied a box of living-room randomness
    % Of course, now my back hurts.
  * 15min: cleared a box of Tolkein books. There's another somewhere.
  * 15min: cleared two boxes of cookbooks (plus the Gorey, in one of them)
  * 15min: cleared the nearly-empty game box. The games are currently on my
    desk chair, but the box was one of the 18" cubes, so it's a net win.

    YD did dishes yesterday (!) so didn't have to deal with a full sink
  * 15min: cleared a box of books (fiction: B-C) while waiting for the water to boil.
  * 15min: identified two more boxes of books (fiction and travel) for tonight.

    As it turns out, it takes a shade over 15 minutes for a round trip from the
    near side of Bothell Way at 153rd. :P
  * the Nexus 7 arrived. Sweet.
  * 15min: 2 book boxes emptied; several boxes stacked against the bookshelves.
    Need to find a place for the big boxes
  * boxes moved. Some next to the bookshelves, others in a pile near the desk.
    Much room in the center, though it needs to have the debris cleared.

  @ You Can’t Say That on the Internet - NYTimes.com (linkedin)
  * need to update both s.s.net and S.s.net - no longer looking for work.
  * 1:20 - turkey just about cooked. Hadn't realized that not stuffing it gets
    it done _that_ much faster. Something like 10min/lb.
  * 3:15 go over to get N and the kids
  * 3:30ish people start showing up. Chaos and Rabbit, N and the kids.
  ~ 5pm turkey done -> actually done ~1:40
  * dinner: turkey, "stuffing", mashed potatoes, gravy, pumpkin pie
    Chaos and Rabbit brought devilled eggs and canned peaches. The gravy, which
    was almost entirely just pan drippings, came out wonderfully. The turkey
    wasn't falling off the bones, but was just barely not undercooked, and very
    juicy.  It worked.

    with sweat. Ugh. Apparently I needed the sleep, though.
  * up 9am; W=198.6; d, n, t; laundry, dishes
  * install latest Eclipse (Juno); Ubuntu's is out of date and doesn't have the
    link to the marketplace. Added m2e and egit
  : Apparently most of eclipse's class-browsing features only work if you can
    compile, and I'm missing quite a few dependencies from my work environment.
    A change of direction is in order, if I want to get anything work-related
    done this afternoon.
    -> read code and configure eclipse on cygnus. Enough time to make up for
       dentist visit on Monday.

  * 5pm submit KForce timecard - only 3 full days worked :(
  @ The Wordsmith's Forge - Poem: "A Stranger Message" *waves to Vixy*

  * got VPN "software token" running via Wine. Easy.

I'm sure I've already linked you to my recipe for Three-Rice Stuffing with Walnuts and Sherry (http://food-snobbery.livejournal.com/27780.html). You don't have to actually stuff it into the bird; it works just as well if you cook it as a side dish. And, of course, it contains no gluten.
