Grumble...

As one can tell from this post in mdlbear_albums, the recording project has hit a snag. Sounds like samples are getting dropped when I try to record vocals while playing a separately-recorded guitar track.

Sounds like I need to go shopping for a faster CPU. Sunday. If I have anything left over after getting the car serviced tomorrow.

Alternatively, I could just record both tracks at once. Less versatile and harder to edit that way, though, so I'd rather not if I can avoid it.

You could, theoretically, record on one system, while another one plays back what you've got so far?

Not easily -- they wouldn't be in sync. You can't even do it reliably on a single system with two different sound cards, unless there's a way of synchronizing their sample clocks.

Actually, of course, you can play and record on different soundcards as long as you play on one and record on the other. I'll try that.
