Not a whole lot going on last week. I installed a new main drive on nova; it's still not fully configured because I'm lazy, but at least it's running. And able to boot. Because I'd installed a SATA card, which I discovered that my motherboard wouldn't boot from. :P Ended up putting the optical drive on it.

I don't seem to post much, if anything, on work days. This says something about work/life balance. Or work/internet balance, which may or may not be the same thing.

Loads of links.

  * ok, weird. Nova won't boot, but the mirror looks ok. Doing a full install on the new
drive. Plan is to pull home and vv off the mirror, stash its /etc, then do an install
into its root partition so that it will be fully bootable. No real point in mirroring
the root partition, so I won't do that anymore.
: Apparently the problem is that the Debian rescue disk simply can't cope with being on
/dev/sda -> no, it's that it won't boot from the add-on sata card.
& ... and after several failed attempts to repartition the drive, success. (Hint: when
it says the kernel is still using the old partition table, believe it.) Also, unmount
the old partitions before deleting them.

One hopes the two balances aren't identical, but I don't have much fear. :D

Computer Stop sells a reasonably good SATA-PATA two-way interface; presents as whichever is needed on each side, so you can use PATA drives on SATA machines and vice-versa, and it will appear to the motherboard as whatever the motherboard expects. That's how we got newmoon back up and running as quickly as we did once its motherboard failed.
