Done last week (20150503Su - 09Sa)
2015-05-10 09:50 amHmm. Long week. The week included a lot of moving stuff around setting things back up after the wedding; that's probably what's behind my current back problems. (See QOTD from yesterday.)
My loaner project at work is winding down, though not as quickly as I'd like. Not feeling very good about work right now.
On the gripping hand, the Great Room looks fantastic, with much more room in its new configuration (blue couch in the SE corner). And Colleen's new baker's rack nightstand has been installed, and looks great. And I upgraded Nova to Debian Jesse, which rocks. (Not entirely clear what I'll do with the extra monitor space; possibly mostly devote it to the to.do file, which I usually edit on Nova anyway when I'm at home. x2x rocks, too.
I have to tell you about x2x(1). (For those of you still stuck on legacy operating
systems, the equivalent is synergy or, if one of your
machines runs linux, x2vnc.) It's the exact opposite of a
remote desktop application (which you get for free in Linux) -- it lets
you share a mouse and keyboard between multiple computers. You just sit
their displays side by side, tell x2x which edges are next to one another,
and your mouse slides smoothly between them, taking the keyboard with it.
Cut and paste work perfectly. Indispensable. I also set it up at work,
between my desktop and laptop.
Links in the notes, as usual.

Took methocarbamol, but it's not helping as much as it did last night. " me: I keep reminding my back that when I told people I was going to spend this weekend recovering from last weekend, I meant it as a joke. My back isn't listening. I think it's related to a cat. " * Upgrade nova to Jessie. See Chapter 4. Upgrades from Debian 7 (wheezy) (now editing to.do, etc. on trantor, because git is awesome) -> done. With x2x running, so I have an extra display. My ctwm config doesn't work too well on what is now a rather small display. Probably worth experimenting with gnome-shell. Took a couple of hours, but only minimal interaction. : Curio, silly cat that he is, vanished. I found him after hours of on-and-off looking, in the far corner of our closet, behind a box and under Colleen's dresses. Cat. : Gnome shell sucks -- too much like Unity. x2x seems to be unreliable. Getting rid of the laptop stand, necessary in order to move the other monitor forward, frees up a lot of desk space, which I'm currently using for a compact keyboard and mouse. : Gnome wasn't actually installed. Not really surprising -- nova's traditionally been a server, not a desktop. But since it's reliable and isn't as essential now that I'm using git for almost everything, it's ok to run a desktop on it. * Installed gnome and xfce. x2x seems more reliable when run from an ssh shell prompt. * Short walk - to the north end of the block and back down the alley. * Dinner from Jones Barbecue. Came in a lot closer to what I had in my wallet than I expected--cash only, and I didn't have the $20 I thought I did. Made it, but barely. & Spent several hours in the Rainbow Room listening to music with Colleen and reading Science. (Because there wasn't anything new on the net.) @ Mother's Day Turns 100: Its Surprisingly Dark History (Google main page) Mother's Day - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia * 15min: recycled some of the accumulated receipts and other clutter on the "makeup table" in our bedroom.
