Instead of a decorated birthday cake, he first requested strawberry-rhubarb shortcake (last year he asked for, and got, a strawberry-rhubarb pie). When I reminded him that "shortcake" must be made with biscuits, not slices of pound cake, he asked me to make Swedish cardamom cake (a long-time family favorite) in a loaf pan, so he could have strawberry-rhubarb compote over slices of cardamom cake. So I made the compote, and the cake. But when I serve him his first portion, I'm going to stick a birthday candle in it :-)
