2004-09-13 09:02 pmEver since I switched to Debian on the file server, starting to read mail in Emacs has hung something in NFS. It eventually does un-hang, but I don't feel like waiting 10 minutes every time I want to suck in my mail. Firefox would hang sometimes, too.
The solution turned out to be switching from the kernel-mode NFS daemon to the older, user-mode one that doesn't support file locking. Not really a great solution, but it worked.

procmail scripts and filtering rules in order to take advantage of it. Disgruntled users might well grumble that I should have done it a year ago, and they'd be right. But I have my reputation as a BOFH to uphold, don't I?
