Colleen and I went out for dinner -- the kids were gaming with friends, and gave us the evening to ourselves. (Something they've done a couple of times before; we're not complaining.)

We went to La Hacienda, a nice Italian place out on Highway 9 somewhere between Los Gatos and Saratoga. I think the last time we were there was brunch with Colleen's mother, about 15 years ago.

It seems to be popular for birthdays, weddings, and anniversaries, which somehow reminded me of my parents' 25th anniversary -- must have been in '66 or thereabouts, just about this time of year. My folks treated us -- my brother and me, and their brothers and their families -- to dinner that Saturday night at a restaurant with a rather similar atmosphere, for all that it was on the other side of the country thirty-odd years ago.

What they didn't know about was the surprise party we'd cooked up for Sunday. My brother was still in high school at that point (three years younger and he already has grandkids -- I'm jealous), so he had done most of the local plotting, consulting me, the family, and a few of Dad's coworkers on the guest list. Sometime in the early afternoon, people started dropping by. Just happened to be in the area; that kind of thing. It wasn't until there was a sizeable crowd of drop-ins that Mom and Dad finally figured out they'd been had, at which point we dragged the booze out of the trunk of one of the cars and called it a party.

Not at all like our 25th -- we hired the band a year in advance; they hadn't been able to get to one of our parties in years, and we wanted to make sure they'd show up.
