N and the kids are moving at the end of this week. I'm stressed.

I've been doing a lot of reading, mostly about Elm, which is a pure functional language that compiles into Javascript. I appear to have decided to implement a couple of apps in it -- I'll blog about my progress, if I don't get too engrossed in actually doing it. I've spent most of Friday, yesterday, and today programming, but have very little to show for it yet.

Much of this was triggered by a take-home programming challenge that was the next step in applying for a job at NoRedInk.com, which does all their front-end work in Elm. I failed miserably, realized that I needed to do a substantial amount of learning, and started working on my apps.

You'll find lots of reference material, mostly on Elm and Javascript, in the notes.

  * The thing about Gatsby is that it expects everything to look like structured data,
including web pages. See, for example, Querying for data in a blog.
Not really an issue in an app, which is going to _need_ structured data and simply
using its back end to persist it. It's not what you want for a blog, wiki, or other
static site. Actually, you _can_ reference static files:
Adding Images, Fonts, and Files | GatsbyJS ... but normally they just get bundled
into the SPA. You probably can't use Gatsby to style your static pages.

to actually build it with elm-make (which of course I stuck into a Makefile).

From a quick look, it appears that Yoda would love Elm.

... You've probably already gotten it, but I suppose I should explain for onlookers. The language has no runtime exceptions. Runtime exceptions are usually handled by a try/catch mechanism. Therefore in Elm, there is no try.
