A pretty good day
2002-11-14 09:26 pmIt started out looking pretty unproductive; I spend the morning dealing with my email and cleaning up the loose ends from the massive code changes I made Tuesday (and spent most of yesterday debugging, and the rest of the day documenting).
Then I gave up my usual lunchtime walk for a talk with my life insurance agent. This is not a regularly-scheduled event -- judging by the date on my most recent policy, the last such talk was 16 years and two agents ago. But it was well worthwhile: it turns out that there's a way to use the accumulated cash value of my current policies to buy about twice that amount of fully paid-up insurance -- or to keep paying the same premiums and do even better. We like this.
Afternoon started out similarly unproductively, with me catching up on my stack of accumulated magazines rather than doing something more useful, like refactoring the server code (well, I did write up the plan...)
But then I dropped in on one of my coworkers to discuss my latest harebrained idea that was somewhat related to what he's been working on lately. It turned out, after a little discussion, that it really was harebrained, and not really any better than what he's doing now. But, after a little more discussion, we somehow converged on something new, quite different, and Really Cool (TM) -- which of course I can't talk about right now. Look for it sometime next year.
My dad always used to say that if you came out of a conference or trade show with one or two good ideas, it was worth the trip. Does something like that apply to ordinary workdays, too? About time, some folks would say.
