I'm 72 years old today. 72 is a multiple of twelve, so it is, once again, the Year of the Pig. (However, it's a year of the Earth Pig; I was born in a year of the Fire Pig, for what that's worth.) It's also the year of my 50th college reunion, for what that's worth.

72 is also 2³×3², the atomic number of hafnium, and the traditional value for room temperature in degrees Fahrenheit.

I feel as though I ought to have something profound to say, but viewing the world as I am through filters of depression and anxiety, that's a bit difficult. But there was a robin on the grass outside my window a moment ago -- that counts for something, I suppose.

Happy Birthday, fellow Pig! I turned 71 last December, which apparently means I'm also a Fire Pig (which explains my fondness for crispy bacon). Spread love around as much as you can, and that's about as profound as I get. Hope you had cake, and adult beverages, and fun on your day!

There are ways to make diabetic-friendly birthday cakes. Maple sugar and/or maple syrup have the lowest glycemic indices of any natural sugar, and maple cake is quite tasty (my New England ancestry is showing). And my late High Priestess, when she became diabetic, just trained herself to eat smaller helpings of cake - I could never do that.

I'm about to bake a bacon and egg pie for dinner, because it's Pi Day, and my husband and I both like bacon-and-egg pie. And I go "whole hog" - my piecrust is made with lard :-)
