Some good things this week, though under my usual definition of "a good week is one where nobody went to the ER" it wasn't a good week -- V's son was the one this time. Too much exercise on too little water.

But the good things -- Sunday L got out of the hospital -- she'd been in with pneumonia. Tuesday, C got out of the hospital. By now she's only a little weaker than when she went in last Friday. And Wednesday my new (to me) laptop arrived. After going through quite a few different possible names (it's a Thinkpad, so the common theme is "black things") I settled on Sable. Sable is not only the tincture (color) black in heraldry, it's an animal with black fur in the weasel family.

Much of the rest of the week was spent on configuring Sable; it's not quite ready to replace Cygnus but it's close. Compared to Cygnus it has twice as much RAM, twice as much SSD storage, nearly twice the battery life, and about ten times the speed. It's a little bigger, and weighs almost exactly the same. (I'm still not entirely convinced that I'm better off with Sable, a Thinkpad X230, than I would have been with an X1 Carbon. Really, it's a bit of a toss-up -- both have their advantages.)

Yesterday I went to (neighbor)Dean's annual birthday party -- alone, since nobody else in the house was up for it. Met a few people. Not as much fun as it was two years ago when I went with C, N and the kids. But...

~ bring charger for L -> not needed, so I'm recharging the battery with it.
/ C thinks that she may be going home tomorrow.
/ It occurrs to me that part of our communication problems may be that C's poor hearing
leads her to distrust what people tell her, even when she's heard it correctly, if it
isn't what she expected to hear. Which it usually isn't.
  % Very little motivation recently.
: the hospital's firewall appears to be blocking ssh. Grump. I doubt that it's the
    first time I noticed.
& picked up some "tuna jerky" at Payless on the way to Coupeville (along with two
crullers, which I ate on the way up). Yesterday's lunch at the caffeteria was
sufficiently disappointing to make me not want to want a repeat. The tuna is pretty
    good; spicy rather than sweet.

There still seems to be an issue with GRUB -- just sat there in the menu rather than
booting -- but other than that it's okay. Or seems to be.

  * 2pm L psych appointment in Coupeville - leave 1:15

: what _was_ a problem was having the outlet-extended pulled out, and wondering why the

primary, which is hard as heck to recover from.

  * up 7ish; W=199.2, S=6:34; cleanup, shower
  * pick up CPAP supplies in Clinton (should be there by now) -> got call
-> so of course they didn't have anything but the nosepiece and filters.
: sable does weird things with the displays -- plug in the second monitor, and it gets
re-labeled display#1. So there's actually nothing wrong with either xmonad or gnome.
It's still a pain in the arse, and might be fixable with xrandr. Or -> a VGA plug.
? but I thought it worked okay with metacity. Must re-check
    ? active vs passive adapter?
-> it varies, and even when they're correctly labeled they're not used as separate
monitors by xmonad, so it's lack of xinerama someplace.
-> works okay with Viewsonic monitor on VGA :P
-> can be made to work with the large monitor on VGA; required control panel fiddling
: sable also has impressive battery life. It's also impressively fast.

  * 1:30ish went over to Dean's party. Good magic show. Met some people, including the
other Steve. A lot of people were here for the second year; I skipped last year.
  * more benchmarks -- blackroot, starlight. MAC addresses, for DHCP.
Blackroot is actually a pretty fast machine -- beats both cygnus and nova.
Raven, Sable, and Starlight are basically comparable, and all are faster than
Snowflake, which was the previous leader.

Embarrassment is a trigger for me, too -- I can't watch a lot of sitcoms because of it, & never have been able to. I wonder if that's related to rejection dysphoria? Would be another tic in the 'I probably have ADHD' column...

I intensely dislike most of what's labeled "comedy". Most of it seems to involve making people unhappy in some way (usually embarrassment or physical discomfort), and demanding that we laugh at their unhappiness. That's not funny!
