Point of curiosity that I've been meaning to ask someone for ages, and you're cool, so! What does the rabbit rabbit thingie at the beginning of a month signify, and where is it from?
Hmm. I've never thought of myself as "cool", so thank you!
I first encountered this in college; it was said that if the first thing you said to someone on the first day of a month was "rabbit rabbit" -- before they said it to you -- you would steal their good luck for the month. I came from the East coast and had never heard that one, so I assumed it was a midwest/western thing. That was the late 1960s (class of '69).
Fast forward to some time in the early 2000's or 'tens, and I found a couple of people on my friends list making "rabbit rabbit rabbit" posts. Presumably by that time it had lost the luck-stealing aspect, and it has certainly gained a third rabbit, but you'd have to ask one of the other rabbit-post practitioners to find out exactly what else the folk process has done to it in the mean time.
