It's been a week. It didn't help that it started with a bad case of vertigo; I'm not sure I've had that before. It had more-or-less cleared up by late Sunday afternoon, but in the interim I ended up using first Colleen's walker, and then my cane. I decided not to drive anywhere.

I've been sleeping pretty badly all week, in part because Colleen has been having a particularly rough time of it (for medical TMI see: here and here; for deaths see here and here). The ongoing environmental (see Sunday's links) and political (see Tuesday) disasters are not helping either.

I also wrote two curmudgeon posts, about current and potential security problems.

As usual, not a whole lot of music apart from my weekly singing lesson, but I did get a fair amount of work done on the songbook software. Never did get PDF internal hyperlinks working, though, because of the tricks I'm trying to play with the table of contents. It might be worth taking another stab at it this week.

There are a lot of good free posters in Saturday's links.

  * up 5:30; S=6:25; % vertigo. Not at all pleasant.
% I sat up perhaps too abruptly or in the wrong direction (sideways), and everything
looked like it was still spinning. 5 or so minutes later it doesn't, but I'm still
having trouble keeping my balance while walking or even moving my head. Which makes
sense. 6:10 no problems if I sit still, but trouble walking.
    ! very worried/scared.
% used C's walker to go to the bathroom and take meds + diphenhydramine (one suggested
med. The others were dramamine and bonine, neither of which I have where I can find
them, though I'm pretty sure we have one of those someplace. Then went into the
kitchen and got a cup of honey ginger tea, and stopped off in the laundry room to grab
    my cane.  -> good move.
& up 10:55; S=9:01; The extra sleep helped. Can walk with the cane if I'm careful.

and trying not to move quickly.

@ A Whirlwind Tutorial on Creating Really Teensy ELF Executables for Linux (LWN)
very perverse, and not for the faint of heart or weak of stomach. High hack value.
" This forty-five-byte file is less than one-eighth the size of the smallest ELF
executable we could create using the standard tools, and is less than one-fiftieth
the size of the smallest file we could create using pure C code. We have stripped
everything out of the file that we could, and put to dual purpose most of what we
      couldn't.
Of course, half of the values in this file violate some part of the ELF standard,
and it's a wonder that Linux will even consent to sneeze on it, much less give it a
process ID. This is not the sort of program to which one would normally be willing
      to confess authorship.
On the other hand, every single byte in this executable file can be accounted for
and justified. How many executables have you created lately that you can say that
      about? "

We've had the vertigo bug around here, too. If it sticks around, there are apparently physical therapy style exercises that can help rearrange the inner ear goop to make it go away? (My mother-in-law needs to be doing those.)
