It's been a low-grade-stressful week due to COVID-19 (see previous post [1]) -- nobody is freaking out, but we've been quietly stocking up on staples and canned goods (among other things), and I reluctantly decided to cancel my trip [2, 3] to Consonance. If it was just me I'd probably risk it anyway, but I have Colleen and my two diabetic housemates to worry about.

RainbowCon 4 is still on, but we'll see how things look around the end of the month.

Other than that it's been rather quiet, except for Wednesday when the new bookshelves fell down.

If you're following climate change, there are some very good podcasts at GlobalOptimism.com.

[1] If you read my previous post, COVID-19, Episode 1, many of the links below will be duplicates, albeit organized differently. Episode 2 will come out later today or tomorrow.

@ Cryptic transmission of novel coronavirus revealed by genomic epidemiology
Some ways to implement non-pharmaceutical interventions include:
Practicing social distancing, such as limiting attendance at events with large
        groups of people
Working from home, if your job and employer allows it
Staying home if you are feeling ill
Take your temperature daily, if you develop a fever, self-isolate and call your
        doctor
Implementing good hand washing practices - it is extremely important to wash hands
        regularly
Covering coughs and sneezes in your elbow or tissue
Avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
Disinfecting frequently touched surfaces, such as doorknobs
Beginning some preparations in anticipation of social distancing or supply chain
shortages, such as ensuring you have sufficient supplies of prescription medicines
and ensuring you have about a 2 week supply of food and other necessary household
        goods.
With these preparation in mind, it is important to not panic buy. Panic buying
unnecessarily increases strain on supply chains and can make it difficult to ensure
that everyone is able to get supplies that they need.

It sounds like you all are doing exactly what is needed to protect yourselves. At this point I am still planning to attend Minicon (coming up in a month) but if my family had your health concerns I probably wouldn't. And if Minneapolis in 4 weeks is where Seattle is now... I will reconsider. We're not in especially poor health, but we're old. Eventually, everyone in the country is probably going to be exposed to this thing, but not necessarily in this first round. And by this time next year there may be a vaccine. Despite all the platitudes about washing hands being the best defense, it seems pretty clear that the best defense is simply STAYING HOME. Sadly, that may involve sacrifices.

I still can't believe that they canceled SXSW, which must have been heartbreaking for many many people as well as a huge economic hit to Austin. But I think it was the right decision.
