Announcement: RainbowCouch Virtual Housefilk, Saturday 5/2 4pm PDT

Since Rainbow Con 4 has been postponed to 2021, we've decided to hold a virtual song circle this coming Saturday, May 2^nd, starting at 4pm PDT. Meeting ID, password, and link will be posted on the RainbowCouch web page sometime Saturday morning.

I've been enjoying the current series of virtual conventions and filk circles; hopefully some of those will continue after things return to some semblance of "normal" and we're able to hold cons and housefilks in meatspace once again. Hopefully not every weekend, or I'd never get anything else done.

And how exactly does that work? Is there some video-conferencing service that has so little lag that people can actually sing together?

Unfortunately, nobody has found a videoconferencing program that lets people sing together. So it will actually be a song circle, probably poker-chip bardic or moderated chaos.

I've heard of one group that streamed a concert by setting up a chain; this required 2N-1 computers for N people (the first person in the chain -- the drummer, in their case -- doesn't need a computer to receive with). I don't know how the mixing was done; it may simply have been speaker-to-microphone.

We're planning to use Zoom for this one.

Another online filksing this week will use Jitsi Meet, which I've installed but haven't used yet. It will be interesting to see how that compares. I really don't trust an outfit (Zoom) that once installed a stealth server on people's computers.
